Ravi Kavasery, M.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Blue Shield of California
Ravi Kavasery, M.D., is senior vice president and chief medical officer at Blue Shield of California, a nonprofit health plan with more than $27 billion in annual revenue, serving 6 million members in the state’s commercial, individual, and government markets. Dr. Kavasery is responsible for advancing high-quality, evidence-based care to members, bridging medical expertise with business priorities or clinical oversight, across all Blue Shield of California’s lines of business.
An accomplished physician executive, Dr. Kavasery is a mission-driven leader known for his approach to advancing high-quality, affordable, and equitable care at scale. He joined Blue Shield in 2021 as vice president, cost of health care, where he led a strategic and programmatic approach to improve health care affordability and deliver higher-quality care at lower cost to Blue Shield’s members. Prior to Blue Shield, he served as medical director of quality and population health for AltaMed Health Services — one of the nation’s largest federally qualified health centers. Until 2018, he was medical director of clinical development and performance for Iora Health, a primary care group renowned for its innovative care delivery model.
In addition to his service with Blue Shield of California Foundation, Dr. Kavasery is currently a board member for the Primary Care Collaborative and the Health Advisory Board for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Previously, he served as a member of the executive steering committee for the California Quality Collaborative, and as associate faculty at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Kavasery received his undergraduate degree with honors from Johns Hopkins University, and his medical degree with honors from Yale University. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was a clinical fellow at Harvard Medical School. During his clinical training, Dr. Kavasery has collaborated with Partners in Health in Rwanda and Malawi. He has also done clinical work in Uganda, the Navajo Nation, South Korea, Malaysia, and Argentina. He is a board-certified internist and continues to see patients regularly in East Los Angeles.
