Recommendations for the Use of eConsult in San Diego's Healthcare Safety Net

Date published: September, 2016 (35 pages)

To understand and address current gaps in specialty care access for low-income patients in San Diego, the Foundation supported the Council of Community Clinics (now Health Partners of Southern California) to bring together local safety net providers and Medi-Cal managed care plans to explore electronic consultation (eConsult) as a potential solution to reduce existing gaps. Based on in-depth workflow analyses, an assessment of available technologies and capacity, and lessons learned from other successful eConsult implementations, this report outlines recommendations for the use of eConsult as a means to improve specialty care access in San Diego’s healthcare safety net.
